Africa Cup of Nations Finals

The Confederation of African Football was proposed by FIFA in 1956 and a year later the first continental championships for national teams in Africa kicked off in Sudan. Originally four teams were to participate in the inaugural competition with the hosts joined by Egypt, Ethiopia and South Africa before the latter were disqualified due to their apartheid policy where they would only select players based on ethnicity within their team. The competition has grown over the years in to one of national football’s most competitive championships with the competition now played every two years often featuring 16 finalists from over 50 participating countries on the continent.
