German Football Champions

Due to a number of it’s nations complicated historical events the football calendar in Germany has varied a lot over the years since the initial inauguration of the German FA (DFB) in 1900. The original championships paired the best team(s) of their regions with over 150 clubs playing across 30 local associations qualifying for the latter stages to win the Viktoria Trophy. The first Deutsche Futballmeisterschaft in 1903 was won by VFB Leipzig and included participants from Prague and Prussia amongst other areas. In 1933 under the Third Reich a new Gauligen Championship was sanctioned under new country laws running until the outbreak of World War II. In 1948 under Allied Occupied Germany the national football championship would re-appear with the Meisterchale Trophy awarded to the national league winner ever-since 1949 (the trophy wasn’t made in time for the 1948 campaign). In 1963 the Bundesliga became the official championship for West German football with East German teams entering in 1991 after the countries reunification post the abolition of the Berlin Wall.
