Spanish Cup Finals

The Copa del Rey (or the Kings Cup) was formed under the name Copa de la Coronacion in 1902 to commemorate the coronation of then King Alfonso XIII with a celebratory football tournament suggested by Carlos Padros Rubio who was then president of the Federacion Madrillena de Foot-Ball. The inaugural competition featured only three teams with Padros refereeing a final between winners Bizcaya and Barcelona but it wasn’t until a year later that the first staging of the ‘official’ Copa del Rey took place. The competition was renamed after the death of King Alfonso and after the Spanish Civil War was re-branded the Copa del Generalismo until the death of Franco in 1977. Today the annual knock out tournament features over 80 teams from the top four divisions of Spanish football.
