Spanish Football Champions

The idea of a national football league in Spain was proposed in 1929 by Jose Maria Acha and sanctioned later that year by the Royal Spanish Football Federation as an alternative to the Copa del Rey which acted as a national championships with teams originally qualifying via their regional leagues for the annual knockout tournament. The first Primera Division was contested by ten teams and included a qualifying tournament for the final spot won by Racing Santander with the rest granted entry based on past achievements. Arenas, Athletic Bilbao, Atletico Madrid, Barcelona, Espanyol, Europa, Real Madrid, Real Sociedad & Real Union making up the numbers with a relegation playoff involving the last placed team and the top side from Segunda Liga. Today La Liga has 20 teams with promotion and relegation to the Segunda Division. Only Real Madrid, Barcelona and Athletic Bilbao have played every season in the top flight since 1929.
